Route: The fortified churches of Thiérache

A getaway to Thiérache:

Discover Parfondeval and the fortified churches, 15 minutes from the Presbytery

Just 10 km from Montcornet, discover the treasures of the Thiérache region from the Presbytery of Sévigny. Visit Parfondeval, one of the "Most Beautiful Villages of France", and follow the guide with the superb brochure from the Tourist Office.

If you're staying at the Presbytery of Sévigny , you already know: we're ideally located at the crossroads of the Ardennes, Marne, and Aisne departments. Today, we're taking you on a short trip to our neighbors in the Aisne to discover a region unique in France: the Thiérache .

Just 10 km from Montcornet and about fifteen minutes from our guest house, a complete change of scenery awaits you, between red bricks, slate roofs and green hedgerows.

🏰 Thiérache and its incredible fortified churches

Are you familiar with the troubled history of this border region?

Between the 16th and 17th centuries, the Thiérache region was the scene of numerous invasions. To protect themselves from raiders, the inhabitants did not build fortified castles... they fortified their churches!

The result is a spectacular and unique defensive architecture. Imagine bell towers transformed into keeps, walls pierced with arrow slits, and watchtowers overlooking the gates. It's a fascinating heritage that Jatin and I (Laurence) love to share with our guests.

❤️ Favorite:

Parfondeval, one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France

If you only had time to visit one village, this would be it. Located just a stone's throw from our home, Parfondeval proudly bears its "Most Beautiful Villages of France" label. And believe us, it's well deserved!

Strolling through its narrow streets, you will be charmed by the architectural unity of the village: everything is a harmony of red bricks and grey slates.

Don't miss these things while you're there:

  • Saint-Médard Church: A magnificent fortified church that can be visited (and whose interior is as surprising as the exterior).
  • The village square: With its pond, wash house and old buildings, it's a living postcard.
  • The small museum: A space dedicated to tools of yesteryear to understand rural life in the region.

It's a bucolic and peaceful walk, perfect for an afternoon with family or a loved one.

🗺️ Our essential tool:

The Tourist Office brochure

To explore this territory without missing anything, we can only recommend the excellent documentation produced by the Thiérache Country Tourist Office .

Their brochure "Route of the Fortified Churches of Thiérache" is a goldmine. Very well designed, it offers:

  • Detailed routes for car or bicycle.
  • The history of the main buildings.
  • A clear map to help you find your way between the villages (Plomion, Jeantes, Bancigny...).

💡 The Presbytery's little extra: No need to rush to the Tourist Office! As ambassadors for our region, we keep this brochure available for you right here in the house . Upon your arrival or at breakfast, just ask us for recommendations: we'll be happy to give it to you and highlight our favorite spots.
